Hearing Protection
Noise-induced hearing loss is one of the most prevalent causes of hearing loss in adults. People who work in high noise work environments without adequate hearing protection are particularly at risk. Work-related hearing loss is considered a critical workplace safety and health issue by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Workers in manufacturing plants, logging, construction, utilities, and occupations involving loud machinery are at particular risk. Most workers do not know that loud noise in the workplace can cause permanent hearing loss.
Exposure to loud noise is the second most common cause of hearing loss with approximately 30 million Americans being exposed to high intensity noise in their workplace. Among these 30 million people, one in four will acquire a permanent hearing loss as a result of their occupation. Most of the hearing damage is preventable. However, through education, audiological evaluations, and hearing conservation programs in the workplace, noise-induced hearing loss is preventable.
